Youth Plan Skate Park in Wynberg

37274effe7bb48489c97adc32aa6a540With growing interest in skateboarding three youngsters from Wynberg are putting together a proposal for a skateboard park in the area.

They hope their proposal would be the start to get the youth to engage in more positive activities in the community.

Mohammed Hassan, Sameer Omer and Nazeer Ramjam have started a group called Joint Skate Collective. They are determined to see their dream become a reality and are putting all their free energy into making their plan a success.

“I have been skating for about ten years and over the years my love for the sport has grown immensely. I am glad that there are so many other young people who share my hobby,” Omer says.

With a Hospitality degree in his pocket Omer gave up the opportunity to further his career to focus on youth development in his community by teaching children about skateboarding.Read More »Youth Plan Skate Park in Wynberg

Wynberg Park Upgrade

In an effort to create a more family-friendly park the Friends of Wynberg Park have established a landscape master plan.

Former chairperson of the Friends Henk Egbrink took People’s Post on a tour of the park and explained what the plan entailed.

The City of Cape Town developed the master plan for the upgrade of Wynberg Park, situated off Trovato Link Road in Wynberg. This plan will guide future development of the park.

Help Find the Cape Rain Frog

SANParks is undertaking a survey of the Cape Rain Frog and is asking for residents help to better understand the densities and distribution of this rare and special frog in residential areas.

One lucky person who completes the rain frog survey before 1 August 2015, will win this lovely book about Southern African frogs (value R398)!

Have you seen or heard these frogs in your garden or when walking along the green belt, or in parks or public open spaces?

SANParks and the Environmental Resources Management of Cape Town desperately need to know where these frogs live in Wynberg!

Found in only two areas
The Cape Rain Frog (Breviceps gibbosus) is endemic to the Western Cape: it was the FIRST frog from Africa to be described by naturalists.

But today the species is considered near threatened: the Cape Rain Frog occurs in only two populations worldwide – one of which is the Cape Peninsula (the other is the Cederberg/Groot Winterhoek).

How to recognize a Cape Rain Frog
Cape Rain Frogs are burrowers found on sloping, sandy or loamy, well-drained soils. The male calls during the mating season, from late April into spring, by inflating his vocal sac. The call is a long, strongly pulsed squawk or croak.

From above, the skin is a darker brown and the eyes are dark and small. The face is flat with a narrow downturned mouth. The skin of the underside is a mottled brown on cream colour, and is coarsely granular, especially on the throat of males.Read More »Help Find the Cape Rain Frog
