Wynberg Park Upgrade

In an effort to create a more family-friendly park the Friends of Wynberg Park have established a landscape master plan.

Former chairperson of the Friends Henk Egbrink took People’s Post on a tour of the park and explained what the plan entailed.

The City of Cape Town developed the master plan for the upgrade of Wynberg Park, situated off Trovato Link Road in Wynberg. This plan will guide future development of the park.
The park is used by people from as far away as Khayelitsha, says Egbrink.

“We want to create a family feel, with play equipment, braai areas and a bigger footpath,” he says.

The plan entails widening the footpaths to make it more user-friendly for mothers with prams, toddlers on bicycles, visitors in wheelchairs and visitors walking their dogs.

“On weekends there are hundreds of people visiting the park – for picnics, concerts, fun days, film shoots, events and braaiing,” he says. Egbrink says the upgrade will encourage more visitors – to accommodate everyone the master plan has been put in place.

“We want to ensure that the park is well looked after and attractive,” he says.

The City of Cape Town recently installed new play equipment for the children and paved one braai section. There are also plans to install more braai spots.

“It makes it more convenient for people when the play area is close to the braai spots – parents can watch their children while they enjoy socialising with friends and family,” he says.

Egbrink says while there is a lot still to be done in the park, he is pleased that there are plans in place to ensure the park is well maintained for years to come.

“We need to protect what is in the community and can only do so if we all participate and look after the facility,” he says.
